Radiello is a compact and user-friendly system for the passive sampling of air pollutants, developed by the Clinical Institute & Environmental Research Centre Maugeri in Italy. It accurately measures the concentration of gases and vapours in the air without the need for pumps, power or supervision. Thanks to a range of cartridges and diffusive bodies, Radiello can capture a wide variety of substances, from volatile organic compounds and aldehydes to acidic and basic gases, ozone, nitrogen and sulphur dioxide, ammonia and even anaesthetic gases.
The system is suitable for personal exposure measurements, fixed workplace measurements, urban monitoring and indoor air measurements in offices, schools and homes.
Radiello uses passive diffusion. Air flows through a microporous diffusive membrane or a special silicone film, after which the target substances are captured in an adsorbing or chemi-adsorbing cartridge. The cartridge is placed in the diffusive body and the assembly is attached to a supporting plate with a clip. Thanks to the self-adhesive barcode label, every sample is uniquely identifiable, both in the field and in the laboratory.
The cylindrical shape of Radiello provides a larger and more uniform diffusive surface compared with traditional flat samplers. This makes the measurements accurate, reproducible and suitable for a wide range of concentration levels.
Radiello sets itself apart from traditional diffusive sampling badges through its unique radial design. Where ordinary badges often have a flat or axial diffusive surface facing an adsorbing surface, Radiello has a cylindrical diffusive body that surrounds the adsorbing cartridge. This means that every point of the diffusive surface is at a constant distance from the adsorbing material, so that diffusion is more efficient and the sampling rate is more stable and more reproducible.
Thanks to this radial design, Radiello can capture a larger number of analytes without the need for extra adsorbing material. This increases measurement sensitivity, particularly at low concentrations, and makes the system suitable for industrial working environments as well as urban and indoor air measurements.
With traditional badges, a larger diffusive surface often means a greater distance to the adsorbing material, so that extra solvent is required during extraction. This limits measurement sensitivity and can reduce reproducibility, especially at low concentrations or in turbulent air flows. Radiello, by contrast, offers consistent diffusion regardless of air flow or the position of the sampler, making the results more reliable.
Occupational hygiene
Personal exposure measurements and fixed-position measurements in the workplace. Radiello is light and portable, silent and safe in potentially explosive environments such as refineries, chemical plants and silos. The system complies with international standards (including EN ISO 23320, EN 482) and allows comparison with limit values such as OEL, TLV, PEL and REL.
Environmental hygiene
Monitoring of urban air quality and industrial emissions. Radiello can be placed outdoors in protective shelters and enables large-scale measurement campaigns with high spatial resolution. This makes it possible to draw up accurate maps of concentration distributions.
Indoor air quality
Measurements in offices, schools, hospitals and homes. Thanks to its compact and silent design, Radiello is unobtrusive and can be used over long periods without causing a nuisance. The system helps to monitor substances originating from furniture, paint, cleaning products, food preparation and infiltrating outdoor air.
Radiello can sample a wide range of substances in gas and vapour form, including:
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs: aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated hydrocarbons, alcohols, esters, ketones, etc.)
Aldehydes (including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzaldehyde)
Phenols (phenol, cresols, dimethylphenols)
1,3-butadiene and isoprene
Hydrogen sulphide (H₂S)
Acids: hydrochloric acid (HCl), hydrogen fluoride (HF), formic acid, acetic acid
Ammonia (NH₃)
Ozone (O₃)
Nitrogen dioxide (NO₂) and sulphur dioxide (SO₂)
Anaesthetic gases and vapours (nitrous oxide, halogenated agents)
For each of these substances, specific cartridges, diffusive membranes and analysis methods are available, ranging from chemical desorption and thermal desorption to ion chromatography, HPLC or GC-MS.
Radiello is simple to use:
Place the cartridge in the diffusive body.
Screw this onto the supporting plate.
Attach the barcode label and note the start date and time.
Hang or wear the sampler during the measurement period.
Afterwards, remove the cartridge, label the tube and send it to the laboratory.
This makes Radiello a certified and user-friendly instrument for anyone who wants to measure air quality – accurate, reproducible and applicable in virtually any environment.
