The Picoyune MA-1 is a portable, personal mercury vapour monitor that measures the concentration of mercury vapour in the breathing zone in real time. The instrument is designed to protect employees continuously against exposure to mercury.
The Picoyune measures continuously and in real time, with a measuring interval of 30 seconds. This provides a reliable picture of exposure over a full working day. With a battery life of approximately 14 hours the device lasts an entire shift, while the internal data storage can retain up to six months of measurement data.
The Picoyune MA-1 is designed for ease of use: once switched on and attached to clothing or equipment, the device works fully automatically, without further settings or manual operation. Visual and audible alarms give an immediate warning when the set limit values are exceeded.
The Picoyune MA-1 uses advanced plasmonic sensor technology with gold nanoparticles, allowing mercury vapour to be detected extremely accurately. Unlike traditional measuring methods, which are susceptible to interference from other gases, the MA-1 is specifically tuned to mercury and insensitive to common interfering substances such as VOCs, CO₂ and NOx.
Gold nanoparticles display a specific optical behaviour known as localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR). When these particles are exposed to mercury vapour, the mercury binds selectively to the gold surface and forms an amalgam. This causes a measurable shift in the light absorption of the sensor. This change is continuously monitored and translated into an accurate measurement of the mercury concentration in the air, which you as the user see on the display.
Because mercury is unique in the way it interacts with gold at this level, the measurement is highly selective and interference from other substances is virtually ruled out. This results in reliable measurements.
Picoyune's plasmonic technology offers a combination of high sensitivity and exceptional selectivity.
Where traditional measuring methods, such as UV spectroscopy, are susceptible to interference from other vapours (such as VOCs or BTEX), the MA-1 detects mercury vapour specifically. This prevents erroneous measurements and increases reliability in practical situations.
In addition, this technology makes it possible to measure both very low concentrations (ppb level) and high concentrations up to 10.000 µg/m³ accurately within a single instrument.
