Svantek SP 91 – Acoustic Impulse Sound Source
The SP 91 is a hand-operated acoustic impulse source, specially designed for measuring reverberation time (RT60) in small to medium-sized rooms, as well as open or reverberant environments of up to approximately 200 m² (600 m³).
With peak sound levels of up to 125 dBC, the SP 91 generates a powerful, broadband impulse that is ideal for accurate acoustic decay measurements. Thanks to its simple, fully mechanical design, the device delivers constant and reproducible results without requiring batteries or an external power supply.
Unlike disposable sources such as balloons or clappers, the SP 91 offers a durable and repeatable measuring solution, allowing users to obtain consistently reliable data for calibration, acoustic modelling or educational demonstrations. This makes the instrument extremely suitable for building acoustics measurements, teaching purposes and demonstrations.
How the SP 91 works
The SP 91 is a mechanical impulse device that generates a short, powerful sound pulse by manual operation, without electronics or batteries. The device works according to the impulse response principle:

The user operates a mechanism that tensions an internal spring.

When this tension is suddenly released, a loud bang or crack is produced that spreads through the room as a broadband sound pulse.

This pulse contains frequencies across a wide spectrum (from low to high tones), comparable to a sharp hand clap or bursting balloon, but far more consistent and repeatable.
The generated sound pulse is then recorded with an acoustic sound level meter that also measures reverberation time. That is the time the sound needs to decay by 60 dB.
