The PAS-6 sampling head is a filter holder intended for specific welding fume measurements. Welding fume is a collective term for a mixture of gases, vapours and particles. This type of fume is released during activities such as welding, but can also be found in similar processes such as grinding, ablation, gouging, sanding and thermal cutting. Carcinogenic chromium VI can be formed mainly during welding work (or comparable operations) on stainless steel. Chromium VI in welding fume can be measured using this PAS-6 Filter Holder and a personal air sampling pump. Any gases released will have to be measured separately using a gas detector.
The PAS-6 head is a conical sampling head made of aluminium, which makes it resistant to the heat involved in welding fume. The opening diameter of this PAS-6 head is 6 mm. Measurements are carried out using a personal air sampling pump, with which the inhalable fraction can be collected on the filter. 25 mm filters are used in this sampling head. The filter is weighed before sampling and again afterwards in order to determine gravimetrically the amount of dust collected.
A commonly used flow rate is 2.1 litres/minute.
