Sorbent tubes sample various volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that evaporate into the air at normal temperatures. These gases and vapours can cause respiratory, allergic or immune response problems. There are countless naturally occurring and man-made compounds that can pollute the air indoors or at work locations, including carcinogens and vapours released from paints, coatings, adhesives and cleaning products.
The type of sorbent tube you use differs depending on the substances you are monitoring. Sorbent tubes with activated charcoal are widely used for sampling non-polar compounds. Sampling tubes with activated charcoal have a large surface area for sampling a wide range of mainly non-polar compounds.
These high-quality glass sorbent tubes are filled with accurately weighed, highly pure sorbents. Many sorbent tubes are divided into sections, with two adsorbing sections being the most common. The first section is twice the size of the rear section and collects the compounds of interest. The second section is a back-up section used to determine whether breakthrough of airborne contaminants has occurred in the front section.
