The ALERT PRO 1000 from Alert Technology is a portable measuring instrument weighing just 5.5 kilograms that allows you to measure airborne asbestos fibres in real time. Once the measurement has started, the air is continuously monitored for the presence of asbestos fibres with 99% accuracy. If asbestos fibres are present, the device will raise an alarm so that measures can be taken to protect your people.
At present, the most common way to identify asbestos in the air is to sample the air, count the number of fibres collected and analyse the fibres to determine whether they are asbestos. This approach involves expensive laboratory work and long waiting times.
An alternative or additional method of evaluating workplace safety is the use of this real-time fibre detector. However, until now the detectors available were unable to distinguish between asbestos and other less hazardous fibres such as mineral wool, gypsum and glass. That is now a thing of the past.
When asbestos-containing materials are removed, fibres are not released in a uniform manner. The ALERT PRO 1000 uses its pump to draw air through the system in a controlled way so that fibres of all types and sizes can be assessed. The high accuracy of 99% is achieved by a patented technology that uses light scattering to examine size, shape and structure. However, the light scattering technique alone is not sufficient to distinguish between hazardous asbestos fibres and far less hazardous but generally more common fibres from building materials such as gypsum or glass.
A second technology incorporated in the instrument therefore measures the magnetic alignment of the asbestos fibres. The paramagnetic properties of all asbestos fibres mean that asbestos fibres will attempt to align themselves when exposed to a magnetic field. An algorithm in the ALERT PRO 1000 assesses this magnetic alignment, allowing asbestos fibres to be distinguished very accurately from other non-asbestos fibres passing through the optical chamber.
This allows the device to detect the presence of asbestos fibres in minutes or even seconds (depending on the fibre concentration).
The measuring instrument has been extensively tested in practice at commercial, public and residential buildings where asbestos removal work has been carried out (so far with forms of crocidolite, amosite and chrysotile).
