Bedrock BTB115 TalkBox – powerful and versatile for large spaces

The Bedrock BTB115 is an advanced TalkBox designed for speech intelligibility testing in demanding acoustic environments. Instead of assembling a measurement set-up yourself from separate components, the BTB115 offers a fully calibrated, ready-to-use solution for playing back test signals. Thanks to its powerful loudspeaker and accurate directivity pattern, it simulates a human speaker more realistically and effectively than ever before.

Application in practice

The BTB115 is mainly used for speech intelligibility testing (STIPA or Full STI) in large or acoustically challenging environments such as stadiums, factory halls, airports, stations, tunnels or other infrastructure where a powerful sound source is required. The BTB115 also comes into its own where standards such as NFPA72, NEN2575 or BS EN 50849 apply. Thanks to the high output power, reliable measurements can be carried out even at distances of up to 10 metres or more.

Measuring speech intelligibility to the standard

Whether you work to NFPA-72, NEN 2575 or other international standards: with the BTB115 you carry out standardised STIPA or Full STI measurements in a reliable and reproducible way. The TalkBox acts as a replacement for a human speaker and plays back accurately simulated speech from the position where the speaker would normally stand. The built-in laser distance meter automatically adjusts the sound level to the distance to the microphone, as required by many standards. 

Full support for STIPA and Full STI

In addition to standard STIPA measurements, the BTB115 also supports the Full STI method, which uses a rotation scheme to cover all 98 points of the Modulation Transfer Function matrix. This method is valuable for measurements in complex acoustic situations involving, for example, discrete reflections or reverberation. 

The TalkBox contains STIPA signals compliant with both rev. 4 (2011) and rev. 5 (2020) of the standard. This gives you flexibility when measuring to different standards or customer requirements.

Also suitable for reverberation time and frequency response measurements

Besides STI signals, you can also choose pink noise, white noise, sine tones or a logarithmic sweep. You use these signals for example for:

• measuring the reverberation time (RT60) using the “interrupted noise” method

• analysing the frequency response of a room or system

• simulating background noise in speech intelligibility studies

This versatility makes the BTB115 more than just an STI source: it is a complete acoustic test instrument.

Human speech recordings in six languages

The TalkBox contains realistic announcements in six languages (including Dutch, English, German and French), by both male and female voices.

When do you choose the BTB115 instead of the BTB65?

The BTB65 is excellent for classrooms, meeting rooms or smaller buildings. But choose the BTB115 when:

• you work in environments with a lot of background noise

• you have to measure over greater distances (more than 4 metres)

• you need absolute certainty about calibration and sound level

• you want to carry out Full STI measurements

• you regularly work with complex acoustics or under time pressure

The BTB115 is the professional choice for demanding situations where an ordinary TalkBox is not sufficient.
