Compact and reliable sound source for STIPA measurements

For every STIPA or full STI measurement you need an accurate sound source alongside a measuring instrument. The Bedrock BTB65 TalkBox has been specially developed to reproduce human speech and is designed specifically for speech intelligibility measurements. The BTB65 is the ideal partner for acoustic consultants working on speech intelligibility in schools, offices, stations or public spaces.

Operation and application

During a STIPA measurement, the BTB65 TalkBox simulates a human speaker. You place the device where someone would normally speak, for example in front of an intercom or public address system, and play the test signal. You then measure speech intelligibility as it is experienced in practice, using for example an SV 977D sound level meter. This makes the BTB65 TalkBox indispensable for inspections and certifications in accordance with IEC-60268-16.

Thanks to the integrated loudspeaker and calibrated output, you do not have to adjust anything yourself: the sound level is correct straight away. Additional signals such as pink noise or white noise, sweep tones and speech messages (in several languages and voices) are also easy to select via the clear touchscreen.

Use in STI/STIPA measurements

The Bedrock BTB65 TalkBox has been specially developed as a calibrated sound source for STIPA and full STI measurements, in accordance with international standards such as IEC-60268-16 (rev. 4 and rev. 5). This makes the device eminently suitable for use in environments where speech intelligibility is of great importance, such as:

• Voice evacuation systems (in accordance with NEN-2575, NFPA-72, DIN-VDE 0833-4 among others)

• Public spaces, such as airports, stadiums and stations

• Office buildings and educational institutions

During a measurement, the TalkBox replaces the human speaker. Thanks to its precise calibration and built-in laser pointer, the device can be positioned exactly at the ‘speaker position’, for example at a microphone on a lectern or control panel. 

STIPA and Full STI: both available

The TalkBox supports both the classic STIPA method and the newer Full STI measurement method:

• STIPA is fast and reliable for most practical situations and public address installations.

• Full STI offers greater measurement depth and is used in complex acoustic environments or where echoes are present. Full STI technology makes complete MTF matrix measurements possible in less than one minute. 

Other test signals

In addition to STIPA signals, the TalkBox also offers:

• Pink and white noise – useful for RT60 measurements or as background noise

• Sine tones and sweeps – for frequency analyses, dynamics or distortion measurements

• Spoken sentences in 6 languages, male/female
